This collection portrays a cross-section of poetry and related activities in the San Francisco Bay Area from the late 1970s to the early 1990s through a broad array of manuscripts, mostly unpublished, and local periodicals. It offers material for researchers interested in the history of the Bay Area poetry community, particularly in regards to the intersection between poetical and political activity. The materials from R.V. Cottam's work with inmates in Vacaville Prison in the early 1980s offer an unusual perspective on both incarceration and poetry. The collection also contains substantive materials relating to Cottam's work with aged persons through the Mature Poets and other organizations. The activities of Poetry in Media, an organization that from 1981-1986 worked to promote the dissemination of poems in newspapers, radio, and television, are recorded in correspondence, minutes, and other documents from its inception to its dissolution. San Francisco's Union of Street Poets is well-represented through a selection of broadsheets and flyers.
